Guys. This is long. Oh man. Okay. Gotta take a deep breath. Seriously, I’m really nervous.
I shall not lie. I’ve been rather afraid for a while about voicing my opinion on Hetalia fandom’s current (and ongoing) issues with offensive history. Mostly because while I do share 90% of (the sane part of) fandom’s sentiments, I know that this post will be botched in some way, labeling me as some kind of Nazi-, Communist-, Evil Person-sympathizer. Which I’m not. I’m an American-blooded patriot and I am extremely proud of my German, Austrian, Italian, Polish, French, English, Swedish, Greek, and wherever-the-hell-else-my-family-came-from heritage. (I COULD GO ON.) I am also extremely proud of each and every one of those countries’ histories, even if I don’t know them (yet) because I’m not Einstein. I don’t know everything. It’s impossible. Sorry. I will say these things, though:
Never have I encountered a fandom filled with so much hypocrisy.
I have an extremely healthy respect for everything history is.
I have an extremely healthy respect for everything history has to teach.
So I like history. (Bet I fooled you, huh?) I was getting really into American history in 2008, then I was directed to Hetalia, and, well, you know what happens next. I was really happy to see historical things being given attention in a way that a lot of people seemed to enjoy. Yeah, they weren’t 100% accurate comics, and yes, the comics left out a lot of things. Fine. So you learn to live with the fact that Hetalia isn’t a history text book and, if anything, should only, at most, be treated as a.) a simple, fun comic, and/or b.) a way to interest bored kids in history. As a history lover? Yeah, disappointing, but whatever. That’s what fics, art, and your imagination are for, right? We’ll get back to this.
History! History is so amazing; it doesn’t have to try. It just happens. History is good, bad, wonderful, evil, dark, funny, happy…. Name any adjective. History is that adjective. Guess what, though? You don’t have to like something that happened in history, but it still happened. William the Conqueror took over England. The British Empire massacred thousands. The Japanese invaded China, and you don’t want to see those pictures. The Nazi party killed millions of people. History isn’t always nice. History is scary, and heart-wrenching. Do you know what’s worse, though?
This year July has 5 Fridays, 5 Saturdays and 5 Sundays. This happens once every 823 years. This is called money bags. So copy this and money will arrive within 4 days. Based on Chinese Feng Shui, the one who does not copy, will be without money. Figured I'd pass this on!
